ORONO and FARMINGTON, Maine (January 24, 2019) – The Maine Credit Union League’s annual Ending Hunger Walking Tour made stops at University Credit Union (UCU) in Orono and Farmington along its 1,800-mile effort to bring attention to Maine’s widespread food insecurity and to raise funds for local food assistance programs.
Walking Tour representative and longtime hunger advocate Brenda Davis visited UCU’s headquarters at 15 Main Street, Orono and retail branch at 154 High Street, Farmington to receive a donation to the University of Maine Co-op. Now in its 17th year, the Ending Hunger Walking Tour was a first-of-its-kind initiative when it began in 2002 as a show of solidarity with the many Mainers who must walk miles on foot to access food assistance.
Each year, the Tour visits credit unions across Maine to collect contributions to food banks, pantries, and distribution programs in each community. Last year’s Walking Tour was among the largest to-date, raising $25,000 in total and bringing its message to over 90 Maine communities and credit unions.
