Celebrating 50 Years
Proudly serving the University of Maine System since 1967.
UCU was established in 1967 in the basement of Coburn Hall at the University of Maine. Since then, we've grown to serve the entire University of Maine System, its students, alumni, employees, and their families. We are proud to continue to serve our original membership and more, focusing on education, including Maine Maritime Academy, and other select schools and employer groups.
1967 - University of Maine Employees Credit Union opened for business.
1979 - UCU began serving Maine Maritime Academy.
1987 - UCU began serving alumni of the University of Maine System and anyone working or living in the town of Orono.
1988 - Our first stand-alone branch opened on Rangeley Road at the University of Maine Campus. It offered the then 4,000 members and 13 employees a much more accommodating space and featured UCU's first ATM machine.
1990 - UCU merged with the University of Maine Student Credit Union.
1993 - Our first Portland branch opened in the Credit Union Mortgage Service building on Forest Avenue.
1994 - Our Portland branch moved to its current location on Forest Avenue.
2000 - UCU created Primary Mortgage Corporation which later grew to serve more than 15 Maine credit unions.
2002 - UCU opened its Bangor branch on Union Street and the teller line became equipped with personal computers for the first time.
2005 - Merged with BANSCO Credit Union.
2007 - UCU expanded to add two more branches. In August, the Farmington branch opened on High Street, and in December the second Portland branch opened on Brighton Avenue.
2009 - UCU opened a real estate lending office in Scarborough.
2010 - Two campus branches opened, one at the University of Maine at Presque Isle and one at the University of Maine in Orono. These branches included state-of-the-art Shared Branching kiosks without a traditional teller line.
2013 - UCU broke ground at the Katahdin site and construction began on our new headquarters and retail branch in Orono.
2014 - UCU opened its new headquarters and retail branch in downtown Orono. The building features a large outdoor plaza that acts as a key focal point in the heart of downtown.
2015 - The Gorham branch at the University of Southern Maine opened.
2016 - The Farmington branch celebrated its grand reopening, expanded parking lot and drive-up teller machine (ITM).
2017 - UCU celebrates 50 years of serving members!
Since our start, we have grown to have nine branch locations from which to serve members, and added a variety of remote eServices to allow members to access UCU, no matter where their busy lives take them.

I can proudly say I’ve been serving UCU members for more than 20 years with the past 11 of those years as the President/CEO. During this time I’ve not only seen exceptional growth and changes, but many things have remained the same over our rich 50-year history. Serving an exceptional community like the University of Maine System students, employees, and alumni as well as their families has allowed UCU to be involved in the various financial life stages of our members. Our roots of education at UCU are mirrored in our mission statement: Prepare, Progress, Achieve… to actively advance the financial well-being of our members in every stage of their lives.
We had simple beginnings; founded on campus at the University of Maine to serve employees with a simple rolling file cabinet and a few chairs. We are fortunate to be where we are today through hard work, perseverance, and dedication to our members along the way. We’ve proudly served education over 50 years, and we continue to grow in many ways to support our field of membership across the state and around the world.
Our branch network growth has us in nine locations across the state from Presque Isle to Portland, and our reach expands past that as we connect with many members remotely as they continue on their post-graduate or post University of Maine employment journeys. It has been an especially busy past 10 years with the opening of six of our nine locations, including our headquarters in 2014 which is located in the heart of downtown Orono. Beyond the expansion of traditional branches and places of service, we have also focused extensively on ensuring our products and services also are constantly expanding and are providing the best in value, security, and convenience to our membership.
Through this journey our goals continue to remain the same: keeping the best service in place for our members so that we can help them achieve their financial dreams. I think all of those who have been a part of UCU would be very proud of where we are today, the thoughtful path we’ve taken to get here, and what we look forward to next.
Thank you to all of our members, employees, volunteers, and partners along the way for your dedication and support with UCU. We appreciate all the ways you have helped to shape UCU and look forward to seeing where we go next.
Matt Walsh, President/CEO
