Phone Scam Targeting Cardholders

Date: August 27th, 2008 - Author: University Credit Union

University Credit Union has been notified of a phone scam thatis targeting ATM and debit cardholders. Cardholders are receiving a message stating that their card is over the limit and that they will be charged a fee unless they call the 800 # provided in the message. When the cardholder calls this 800 # they are prompted to enter their social security number and their card number. Once this information has been entered the call ends.
Please be aware that UCU will never ask you to give yoursocial security numberover the phone. Unfortunately, these incidents happen all to often to people all around the world. It's important to protect your financial information. Below are some tips to help prevent identity theft:

  • Before revealing personal financial information, find out whom you're dealing with, how the information will be used, and if it will be shared with others. Remember, University Credit Union will never contact you via email asking for your personal account information.

  • Only give your SSN when it's absolutely necessary. Ask if you can use another identifier, such as a driver's license, instead. And don't carry your social security card in your wallet unless you need it that day.

  • Look over your credit card and credit union statements each month for unauthorized charges or suspicious activity.
