There is currently a mortgage audit notice scam circulating in which people are receiving a notice stating that they may be eligible for a refund from their mortgage lender. The notice provides a number to call with a case number to begin the analysis and review. The scam has the potential to cost consumers a significant amount of money. There is currently a phone scam taking place where UCU members are receiving phone calls stating that “University Federal Credit Union is calling to advise that their debit card is being placed on hold due to a third party issue”… The call back phone # that is given is invalid. This is NOT a legitimate phone call from University Credit Union.
University Credit Union has been notified that a phishing scam involving text messaging is currently affecting UCU members.
It has come to UCU's attention that in the first and second weeks of December 2009 a developer using the Android platform has deployed shells of mobile banking applications to try and gain access to banking customer’s financial information at other financial institutions.
There is currently a check scam circulating in which people are receiving a counterfeit check with a letter stating that they have won a promotional contest through an insurance company.
There is a new telephone scam circulating. The call starts out as a pre-recorded message telling the person that their card has been used fraudulently.
There is currently a text message scam circulating involving a message that indicates to debit card holders that their card has been deactivated and to call a number to reactivate the call.
There is currently a counterfiet check scam targeting individuals who may be interested in a mystery shopping job.
University Credit Union is continuing to receive lists of potentially affected accounts from VISA at this time however, it is still unknown how many accounts have actually been compromised with this data breach. The only information that was identified at risk with this breach was the debit card information and no other personal information such as social security numbers, date of birth or checking account information was compromised.
The Maine Credit Union League reports that its member credit unions have joined other financial institutions in Maine in assessing the impact as the result a security breach that occurred through Heartland Payment Systems, a third-party card processor used by 250,000 merchants nationwide and based in Princeton, N.J.
There are reports of a telephone scam involving fraudsters attempting to obtain personal information from ATM/Visa Check cardholders. Cardholders are receiving computer-generated calls claiming to be from their financial institution.
